ONUG has always held a special place in my heart. That’s where Viptela, my first startup, launched and introduced SD-WAN to the world. It was great to be back at ONUG Spring 2023, reconnect with old peers in person, and even be honored to speak in a group panel with thought leaders from Raytheon and IBM.
I’d like to give a quick shout-out to Nick Lippis, the co-founder of ONUG, for providing our community with a forum to address our issues.
I wanted to share three key takeaways from ONUG Spring 2023 for those who couldn’t make it.
- Open forums help resolve networking issues.
The importance of open forums for discussion, debate, and education between enterprises and vendors helps the community stay sharp. It is refreshing to see new technologies advancing the way we do business, and only through open communication can we solve the issues companies are dealing with.
- There is a shift towards consuming network services rather than building bespoke networks.
IDC predicts we’ll have 175 zettabytes of data by 2025. With so much growth, we’re now seeing evidence that legacy models won’t be able to handle the coming influx of data. Businesses are leaning towards consuming network services rather than building bespoke networks.
- To support modern business needs, we need to evolve and adapt.
What worked yesterday won’t work tomorrow. As an industry, we need to grow and move away from the “this is how we’ve always done it” mentality. Business is changing to an as-a-Service model, and how we have architected networks in the past doesn’t support that.
